Jerry Barnes, bassist for Roberta Flack, Chaka Khan, Whitney Houston and others, shows you 27 of the ultimate funk/R&B bass patterns in this lesson filmed in 1999. He covers classic patterns from the 1960s to '80s, plus exciting performances with bass, drums and a full band. Includes a lesson booklet with complete transcriptions with tab.
Pros: Smooth playing, very nice licks and great tone. Thoughtful tab is included as well.Cons: Can't tell what his fretting hand is doing. He can play anyway he likes since he's an artist. But for this video he's a teacher so he should try not to obscure his fingerings. Doing so defeats the purpose of buying the video since you can't see what is going on.Cons: None of the licks are played at half speed. Every thing is at speed then on to the next groove. Most instructional videos of this type would have each lick played twice with one being much slower than the normal speed to focus on timing. This would be better off in book form with a lot more licks. He's not taking advantage of the DVD medium but charging DVD prices. Should be a book at half the price.
