Product Description

Fly fishing for smallmouth bass is one of the most exciting forms of angling. This "gentlemen of the warm water species" is broadly distributed throughout the United States so many anglers can find him close to home and find gratifying angling quite easily. He is at home in small rolling streams, broad meandering rivers and crystal clear lakes. In all of these waters he will take flies with gust and then leaps into the air to show his sleek bronze body. Harry Murray shows the tackle, flies and casting methods which are effective when fly fishing for smallmouths. Drawing on a lifetime of smallmouth fishing, guiding and teaching his angling schools he shows you how to evaluate rivers in order to find the best places to fish. Harry discusses in great depth the various minnows found in smallmouth rivers, the flies that match them and the most productive techniques for fishing them. The smallmouth nymphing game is one of Harry's favorite techniques and he shows you the types of water and the methods that work best. He then goes to the surface and covers the best ways to take smallmouths on dry flies and surface bugs. There is special attention given to floating the rivers and fishing ponds and lakes. This new book by Harry Murray covers all aspects of fly fishing for smallmouth bass in a way that anglers of all skill levels can benefit in order to improve their days on the water.

Harry Murray's is the best book I've read on the topic-If there is someone else who's put more into understanding the foods that are important to river smallmouth and developing techniques to take them on the long rod, I don't know who that would be. The other books I've read were written by trout fishermen (albeit famous and worthy ones where trout are concerned) who didn't seem to have the proper respect for smallmouth-'Tie on a popper and pound the banks' was about all they had for technique-the rest was generic stuff on tackle and general page-padding. If that's all you want, then save your money and go fishing instead of reading a book. If you want to catch more and larger bass under a wider range of conditions, and you are enough of a student to actually work on the stuff he describes, read Harry Murray's book. For instance, his very fastidious method of hand-tying leaders with Scientific Anglers indicators at specific locations involves a little learning curve, but results in reliable and excellent fly turn-over and great strike detection. Along those lines, he has some great stuff on nymphing (I noticed Harry Murray actually mentioned as an 'angling pal' in one of master nymph fisher Charles Brooks' books) to effect a deadly style of nymphing deep runs on our slower smallmouth streams. Learning that, too, requires effort, but I've tried it, it's all there and it works to take fish you won't get any other way with a fly rod. A lot to absorb in one sitting, so read about a technique, several times, try it on the stream, and repeat. Makes more sense with each outing. Also of note, his hellgrammite pattern (the tying of which is NOT described in this book-he sells kits and the flies themselves at his shop in Edinburg, VA) might be the best ever devised, in case they are important on your stream.
