I've taken a lot of time with this game because I am an engineer, an amateur musician, and I hate guitar hero and have always said Rocksmith is the game they should make. This game could be used to learn guitar, or bass, but it’s better with prior experience or parallel musical practice and education. Maybe if you had a little more control of the “level up,” but to much control would risk too much game tweaking time and lose the plug and play feeling. This game is very good for honing your chops. The #1 advantage of this game is probably the playback of your own playing after you complete each song. Unfortunately, it’s probably been utilized only about 3% of the time. Seriously, you will learn more from reviewing your past performance than anything else. So, for the game, the note detection is quite good. Timing detection is alright, but when you start picking a whole lot of notes, you could get away w/ letting the string just ring or hitting the notes at any old time. Again, listen for the playback. That way you don’t judge yourself totally by your score. If you’re on it, playing nicely w/ the rhythm of the song, then you’ve got it.The practice modes are good, and varied. I never found one that was exactly what I felt I needed, and sometimes I wish I could just set a riff difficulty level w/o going through all the crazy practice. One thing glaringly missing is an old school tab or music notation option. The training is fine, but sometimes I just wished to learn the notes in a more familiar way.The song selection is pretty diverse and quite enjoyable. I even have even come to learn and love a few new songs. One major advantage of Rocksmith is I’ve learned to play a lot more w/o looking at my own fretboard. This makes me infinitely more pimp and worthy of makeup and big hair, like Poison…because I’m now just that much of a Rock-Stud.Disadvantage would be I don’t tend to memorize music much anymore, now that I’ve learned to rely on the notes coming at me and reacting with muscle memory. Sometimes I get more into the game and lose rhythm and musicality. It seems important for me to switch back into music mode. Sometimes the incessant leveling up can hinder this difference. All in all, I’m extremely happy this game exists and do love it. Rock on.
